ABOUT
The Tauihi Basketball League was established in 2022 as Aotearoa New Zealand’s first fully professional women’s basketball competition, created to fill a long-standing gap between domestic club play and the international stage.
Backed by Basketball New Zealand, Tauihi brought together the country’s top talent into a short, high-intensity, 12-week season designed to showcase elite performance, raise standards, and give women athletes a professional environment at home rather than overseas.
Its impact has been immediate.
Tauihi has become a critical development pathway for the Tall Ferns program, accelerated coaching and officiating standards, and shifted public perception of what women’s basketball can be in New Zealand - fast, physical, skilful, and commercially viable.
More than a league, Tauihi is infrastructure: proof of concept that investing properly in women’s sport lifts participation, visibility, and ambition across the entire ecosystem, from grassroots to the global stage.
